Summer Kickoff: Seniors, Stay Cool & Connected this Summer

Summer has arrived, bringing longer days and brighter skies. For many, it’s a season of joy, but for seniors, the heat and isolation can quickly turn into challenges.

Summer is also a time to enjoy the sun with friends and family, and we hope you are getting ready to make the best use of it.

Although with the benefits also come some downsides to navigate. One of the downsides of Summer is dehydration.

Dehydration is one of the most common risks during summer. Dehydration occurs when the body does not have enough fluids. A simple glass of water can make a big difference, yet many seniors forget to drink enough throughout the day. Pairing hydration with light, early‑morning walks helps keep energy up while avoiding the midday sun.

Here are some hydration tips for seniors in New Jersey

  • Drink water regularly: Small sips throughout the day are better than waiting until you're thirsty.

  • Add natural flavour to your water: lemon, cucumber, or mint can make it more appealing. This also helps you drink more water.

  • Eat water‑rich foods: Watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and lettuce all help boost hydration.

  • Limit caffeine: These can increase fluid loss.

  • Keep water accessible: Place bottles or cups in easy‑to‑reach spots to encourage you to drink more water.

  • Use reminders: Alarms or caregiver check‑ins encourage regular drinking.

Beyond physical health, summer can also highlight loneliness. With families busy and schedules packed, seniors may spend long afternoons alone. Regular check‑ins, whether from loved ones or caregivers, can transform those hours into moments of connection.
